Doctors at OGH carry out gender-affirming surgery

Surgeons at Osmania Hospital in Hyderabad successfully performed a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy on a 23-year-old trans male. This procedure is part of a gender-affirming process to permanently transform the individual into a male.

The surgery was carried out as the first stage procedure under the Transgender persons’ Healthcare services. Before the surgery, the patient, Sompelly Soni (Yashwanth Kumar), underwent hormone replacement therapy. This treatment was provided by the endocrinology team after confirming the diagnosis of gender dysphoria, where there is a mismatch between biological sex and gender identity.

The surgery was a collaborative effort between the surgeons at Osmania Hospital and Petlaburj Maternity Hospital. The team included obstetrics and gynecology specialists, led by Dr. Malathi, and general surgery specialists, led by Dr. Mallikarjun. The anesthesia team, headed by Dr. Pandunaik, Dr. Pavani, Dr. Madhavi, and Dr. Balaji, along with the nursing and support staff, also played a crucial role in the successful completion of the surgery.

The surgery involved the removal of the uterus (vaginal hysterectomy) for the trans male. This individual was assigned female at birth but identifies as a male. The endocrinology team provided hormone replacement therapy to support their gender transition.

Dr. G Nagender, the superintendent of Osmania Hospital, highlighted the significance of such medical services for the transgender community. He mentioned that these procedures are not available in private healthcare facilities in Hyderabad, and patients often have to travel to Mumbai for such treatments. The recent launch of a transgender clinic at Osmania Hospital aims to provide essential services for the community.

Dr. Nagender also reported that the individual is recovering well after the surgery. The trans male will receive further treatment and support throughout their gender transformation process, involving various specialty and super specialty teams.
