Hyderabad: DIET Neredmet Faces Uncertain Future
The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Neredmet, Hyderabad, did not secure affiliation for the academic year 2024-25. This development has raised concerns about the institute’s potential closure and the uncertainty surrounding the future of its teaching staff.
Recently, the School Education Department renewed affiliations for nine government DIETs across Telangana for the next four years (2024-28). These included institutes in Mahbubnagar, Vikarabad, Medak, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Khammam, and Nalgonda. However, DIET Neredmet was not included in this list, leaving staff members worried about the institute’s future.
Despite having sufficient infrastructure, DIET Neredmet failed to renew its affiliation. Sources suggest that the School Education Department did not take adequate steps to secure this renewal. The 60-year-old institute now appears deserted following its exclusion from the web counseling options for DEECET-2024. Because of this, no admissions were made for the D.El.Ed and DPSE courses for the 2024-25 session. The second-year students who were already enrolled completed their courses by August 2024, leaving the campus empty.
DIET Neredmet was especially known for offering training courses in English, Telugu, and Urdu at reasonable fees, unlike many private institutions that only provide courses in one language and charge higher fees. Its potential closure has raised concerns, as the institute was a popular and affordable option for aspiring teachers.
Kasturi Ravinder, General Secretary of the State Guest Lecturers Association, highlighted additional challenges. He mentioned the government’s recent decision to allocate five acres of DIET Neredmet’s land for non-academic purposes, further jeopardizing the institute’s operations. This decision has left both teaching staff and trainees in a state of uncertainty. Furthermore, many prospective students have not yet enrolled in alternative colleges due to their higher costs and inconvenient locations, which are far from the city.
When contacted, officials from the School Education Department in Telangana stated that they have resubmitted all required documents to the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and are awaiting a response. Until then, the future of DIET Neredmet remains uncertain.
