Hyderabad: The working president of BRS, KT Rama Rao, stated on Monday that if the number of seats in the Southern States decreases during the delimitation process, it would lead to a strong people’s movement in all of Southern India.
Rao’s statement was in response to a media report suggesting that the Lok Sabha seats in the Southern States are likely to decrease during the delimitation process. It is expected that seats will be increased based on population, which would result in a decrease of seats in the Southern States.
A media organization reported that the current allotment of seats for States is based on the 1971 census. However, estimates from Carnegie Endowments indicate that if seats are revised based on projected population for 2026, some States might gain seats while others could lose them. According to the organization’s chart, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, which currently have 42 seats, would have 34 seats after 2026, indicating a decrease of eight seats.
The biggest beneficiaries would be Uttar Pradesh with an addition of eleven seats, Bihar with ten additional seats, Rajasthan with six more seats, and Madhya Pradesh with four more seats.
Rao emphasized that they are proud Indians and representatives of the best-performing States in India. He stated that they will not remain silent if the voices and representation of their people in the country’s highest democratic forum are suppressed. Rao expressed hope that wisdom prevails and that Delhi is listening.
