The Defense Ministry has given the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and 55 other SCBs across the country an extra year of tenure. The previous extension of six months was supposed to end on February 10, but now it will be extended until February 10, 2025.
There are some people who have been advocating for elections that have been delayed for several years. They are not affected by the Defense Ministry’s announcement about the SCB. Last year, the elections that were scheduled for April 30 were canceled at the last minute. Locals are also concerned about the proposed merger between the GHMC and the SCB, as well as the need for development funds.
The updates on the Secunderabad Cantonment Board were eagerly awaited. The Defense Ministry’s decision regarding the SCB tenure was announced by Joint Secretary of Defense Rakesh Mittal. He mentioned that the Central Government has the power to vary the constitution of Cantonment Boards under certain circumstances, and in this case, the variation will be effective from February 11, 2024, for a period of one year or until the boards are constituted under the Cantonment Act, whichever comes first.
