Congress government fulfills promise on fine rice scheme

Gadwal: District Collector B M Santosh has encouraged eligible people to take full advantage of the fine-quality rice being provided by the government.

On Wednesday, the Collector and Gadwal MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy officially launched the fine rice distribution program in the 35th and 26th wards of Gadwal town. This initiative is part of the Telangana government’s plan to improve food security for poor families. As a special gift for the Ugadi festival, the rice is being given out free of cost.

During the event, the Collector explained that many people find it difficult to eat regular coarse rice. To solve this problem, the government is supplying high-quality fine rice through ration shops. In Jogulamba Gadwal district alone, over 1.62 lakh families holding ration cards will receive this rice from 335 ration shops, helping more than 5.5 lakh people. Each person will get 6 kilograms of rice every month.

He added that the rice being given out is worth ₹40 per kilogram in the market but is being distributed for free. The Collector urged people not to sell the rice illegally and reminded them to use it wisely. He also mentioned that the government is supporting farmers by giving them an extra ₹500 per quintal along with the Minimum Support Price (MSP) when buying paddy. The rice being distributed is directly purchased from farmers and then sent to ration shops.

The Collector said this scheme is part of the government’s larger goal to make sure no poor person goes hungry, no matter the challenges.

MLA Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy also spoke at the event. He remembered the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, who launched the ₹2 per kg rice scheme to help the poor. He said that while previous governments continued rice distribution programs, the current Telangana government has taken a new step by buying paddy directly from farmers, turning it into rice, and giving it away for free through ration shops.

The MLA said this move, where rice worth ₹40 per kg is being given at no cost, shows the government’s strong focus on public welfare. He also asked people to use the rice for their own families and not to sell it. Additionally, he announced that new ration cards would soon be given to all eligible citizens.

The event was attended by Additional Collector Lakshmi Narayana, Gadwal Tahsildar Mallikarjun, District Civil Supplies Officer Swami Kumar, ration dealers, and other local representatives.
