Water levels in reservoirs such as Hussainsagar, Himayatsagar, and Osmansagar have reached alarming levels due to heavy inflows. To prevent submergence and flood-related damage, authorities are taking precautions around these water bodies. Two gates of Himayatsagar have been lifted.
The water level in Hussainsagar has reached 513.62 meters. This will affect areas like Domalguda, Gandhi Nagar, Kavadiguda, and Himayatnagar.
Several tanks in Hyderabad, including Moosapet, Badlaguda, and Balapur, are on the verge of breaching. Special technical teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) have been deployed to monitor water levels and ensure the safety of tanks and lakes during heavy rain.
According to a senior GHMC officer, the water level in Hussainsagar has surpassed the full tank level (FTL) of 513.6 meters, currently standing at 513.62 meters. However, there is a cushion of 1.3 meters before reaching the maximum level. People downstream of the lake have been alerted, and water is being released through sluices. The officer also mentioned that a retaining wall has been built in the nala but advised people to remain vigilant.
To address the challenges posed by heavy rain and flooding, the GHMC has activated 428 monsoon emergency teams working round the clock. Additionally, 27 disaster response force teams have been deployed at water-logging points to facilitate swift drainage in low-lying areas.
Due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, both reservoirs are overflowing. Two gates of Himayatsagar have been opened to release excess water into the Musi river. If the rain continues, Osmansagar gates may also be opened. Water is being released through nozzles to prevent inundation of low-lying areas, and residents have been alerted to be prepared for emergencies.
The GHMC and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are monitoring the situation in the Musi catchment areas.
Residents in affected areas have expressed their concerns. Sunil from Himayat Nagar mentioned that the lanes of his area have been flooded, causing hardships similar to last year’s floods. Ramu from Kavadiguda shared that even light rain is enough to flood the area, causing worries for families living there.
