Chief Minister Unveils Plan to Clean Drains within ORR Limits

Hyderabad: The State Government has started a major project that aims to make Greater Hyderabad the city with the largest sewerage development project in the country.

The project, called the ‘Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan,’ focuses on improving the sewer system within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits. This plan is designed to meet the current and future needs of the fast-growing city and will cover all areas under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and 27 nearby municipalities.

The project will span 7,444 kilometers and is expected to cost Rs 17,212.69 crore. Officials have noted that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who also oversees the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department, is eager to complete the project within a specific time frame.

Revanth Reddy has also requested support from the Central Government to include this project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. He submitted a formal request to the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar, on Monday.

Officials believe that developing an advanced sewer system will help Hyderabad become the cleanest city in the country. This could also attract more international attention and investments for the city.

Currently, many of the old sewers were laid by small municipalities, and the entire sewer system needs an upgrade. New lateral sewers, branch sewers, and trunk mains will be installed to stop sewage from flowing into open drains, according to a MAUD official.

The work on the sewer system has already started in Zone-3, and the tender process for Zone-2 is underway. Proposals for areas on the outskirts of the city have also been finalized.

The project is divided into three main packages: Package-1 will cover areas like Uppal, Kapra, Malkajgiri, Alwal, and Serilingampally. Package-2 will focus on Rajendranagar and LB Nagar. Package-3 will be implemented in Kukatpally and Qutubullapur. By combining the core city and outer areas, the plan aims to build a strong sewer system that can handle future needs.
