Celebration held for Atukuri Molla, the first female Telugu poet

The Telangana State Kummari Sangham in Mahabubnagar district organized a grand celebration to honor Atukuri Molla Mamba, the first female poet in Telugu literature. The event took place on Thursday, with Kummari Sangham district president Bugganna addressing the gathering.

Bugganna spoke about Atukuri Molla Mamba, a 15th-century poet from the Kummari community. She is known for simplifying the Ramayana into 871 verses across eight chapters, making it easier for common people to understand.

During Molla’s time, women’s education was discouraged, and poetry by women and lower castes was strictly prohibited. Despite these challenges, she proved that women were equally talented in literature. She showed that anyone who respects nature and loves society can make valuable contributions to literature.

As part of the event, the Kummari Sangham leaders garlanded Molla’s statue. They also urged the state government to officially recognize and celebrate Molla Jayanthi every year, acknowledging her significant contributions to Telugu literature.
