CBI yet to make any arrests in 6 Manipur violence cases

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating six cases related to violence in Manipur. However, they have not made any arrests yet. The CBI took over the FIRs from the state police last month and the investigation is ongoing. The agency has not made the FIRs public due to the sensitive nature of the cases. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed by the CBI to handle these cases, and they are facing challenges such as hostile crowds and protests while trying to gather evidence and find witnesses.

The violence in Manipur started after a “Tribal Solidarity March” took place in the hill districts of the state on May 3. This march was organized to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Manipur Police is currently in touch with the two women who were paraded naked and sexually assaulted during this time. A team of women officials and personnel from Manipur police has been formed to investigate this case, and they have started recording statements from the victims and their family members.

In another incident, two security personnel, including an Army jawan, were injured in a gun-battle with militants in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. The gunfight lasted for around 15 hours before the insurgents fled the area. One house was set on fire during the shootout, and the police intervened to disperse the mobs.
