Caste Census: Chief Minister directs officials to form ‘specialized commission’

Hyderabad: In response to orders from the High Court, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to form a special commission to study reservations for Backward Classes in local bodies. The government is expected to release official orders on this matter by Monday.

The Chief Minister held a review meeting at his residence in Jubilee Hills to discuss the caste census. He urged officials to speed up the process of creating the new commission and take all necessary steps to ensure it is finalized by Monday. During the meeting, which was attended by the Cabinet Sub-committee on Backward Classes, he stressed that the commission must follow the guidelines of the High Court and Supreme Court to avoid any legal problems.

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to conducting the caste census and said there would be no compromise on this issue. It is important to note that on October 31, the Telangana High Court ordered the State government to set up a ‘Dedicated Commission’ instead of the ‘Backward Classes Commission.’ The court pointed out that assigning the task of collecting data to the Backward Classes Commission went against a previous Supreme Court ruling. This directive came during a hearing of a petition filed by former MP and BC leader R Krishnaiah.
