"Car fire safety awareness programme conducted by gig workers in Hyderabad"

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) conducted an awareness programme for drivers on car fire safety, due to the increasing number of cars catching fire during the summer months. The programme aimed to teach drivers how to prevent car fires and what to do in case of a fire. Shaik Salauddin, founder-president of TGPWU, explained that cars can catch fire due to mechanical or electrical issues, as well as crashes. Most car fluids are flammable, and heat and electrical sparks can ignite them.

During the awareness programme, drivers were taught how to prevent car fires by having their cars regularly serviced by a professionally trained mechanic, checking for leaks or other issues, and not transporting flammables in the passenger compartment. They were also advised to equip their cars with a small fire extinguisher near the driver’s seat to put out small fires immediately.

In case of a fire, drivers were advised to pull over as quickly as possible, turn off the engine, and get everyone out of the car. They should never return to a burning car for anything and should move at least 100 feet away from the burning vehicle and well away from traffic. Danger signs to look out for include cracked or loose wiring or electrical problems, a fuse that blows more than once, oil or fluid leaks, an oil cap not on securely, rapid changes in fuel or fluid levels, or engine temperature.

Overall, by following vehicle safety requirements and taking their cars for regular maintenance, drivers can reduce the risk of their cars catching fire during the summer months.
