Baker prioritizes feeding the hungry over giving alms

In Tolichowki, Hyderabad, a naan bread baker named Mohammed Iqbal has been quietly helping the hungry for the past four years. From 6 am to 10 pm every day, Iqbal gives away free bread to anyone in need. His philosophy is simple: “Hunger doesn’t choose, and neither should we.”

Iqbal’s journey began nearly a decade ago when he opened Abdullah’s Naan, a traditional tandoor bakery located on the road connecting Tolichowki X Road to 7-Tombs. As his bakery became successful, he noticed more and more people gathering outside, looking for food. Instead of turning them away, he decided to help.

The inspiration to offer free food came from discussions at his local mosque. Iqbal and others talked about how feeding the hungry is one of the best acts of charity in Islam. Motivated by these teachings, he started setting aside 60 pieces of naan every day, ready to give to anyone who needed it.

Over the years, Iqbal’s generosity has touched many lives. It’s not just the homeless who benefit from his kindness—taxi drivers, night watchmen, and even passersby stop by to collect their share of food. “We do not discriminate. Whoever needs it, take it. It’s their share of food,” Iqbal says with a warm smile.

At one point, Iqbal also offered Nahari, a type of soup, alongside the naan. However, he had to stop serving it due to difficulty finding a reliable cook. On Thursdays and Fridays, he goes the extra mile by giving out two bananas with the naan to brighten the day of those he helps.

Iqbal’s mission has inspired others in the community. Many of his regular customers now contribute to a “charity basket,” placing a portion of their purchases in it to support his efforts. Despite the attention he has received, Iqbal remains humble. “This is not about fame. God has given me the strength to do this, and it is through His grace that I am able to serve,” he says.

Through his unwavering kindness, Mohammed Iqbal continues to make a difference in the lives of those in need, one piece of bread at a time.
