Secunderabad: In a shocking incident at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday, a female intern working in the casualty ward was assaulted by an intoxicated patient.
According to witnesses, the assault was unprovoked and caught hospital staff off guard. Security cameras captured footage of the incident, showing the patient, a man in his 40s, violently grabbing the intern while she attempted to defend herself, causing her apron to be torn.
Hospital staff quickly intervened, rescuing the intern and overpowering the assailant before handing him over to Special Protection Force (SPF) personnel, who then escorted him to the Chilkalguda Police Station.
Chilkalguda Inspector B. Anudeep reported that the attacker, J. Prakash from Bansilalpet, was suffering from epileptic fits. “He was brought in for consultation by his family members and suddenly grew violent, physically assaulting the doctor on duty. However, other junior doctors intervened in time,” he said.
This attack comes amid growing concern over the safety of healthcare personnel, following a recent strike by medical professionals demanding enhanced security measures after the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) has vehemently denounced the incident, calling for swift action.
“The Gandhi JUDA condemns the assault and calls for swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of medical staff and interns. The association demands a thorough investigation into the incident and measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” the association stated.
A case has been registered against the accused, and authorities are currently investigating the matter.
