The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad has successfully treated a 93-year-old man with cancer of the ascending colon, a part of the large intestine located on the right side of the abdomen. The patient, Mr. Gheesaram, had been experiencing abdominal pain and weight loss for two months before seeking medical help. After careful evaluation, the hospital’s surgical team performed a major procedure called Laparoscopic-assisted radical right hemicolectomy. This surgery involved removing a portion of the right side of the colon and reconnecting the remaining intestine.
Due to Mr. Gheesaram’s advanced age, the surgery was particularly challenging. However, the team of experts at AOI carried out the procedure with great care and precision. Fortunately, the patient made a smooth recovery and was discharged in a stable condition just five days after the surgery.
Harish Trivedi, CEO of CTSI – South Asia, highlighted how this case demonstrates AOI’s expertise in cancer treatment. He remarked, “This case shows our capability to handle complex cases and offer world-class care. Mr. Gheesaram’s recovery is a reflection of our commitment to giving hope and healing to patients, no matter their age or condition.”
The surgery was performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic methods, which offer several advantages, especially for elderly patients. These benefits include a shorter recovery time and lower surgical risks. The medical team also used advanced anesthesia techniques to make sure the procedure was safe and effective.
Dr. Prabhakar P, the Regional Chief Operating Officer at AOI, expressed pride in his team’s achievement. He said, “Treating a 93-year-old patient with such a complex condition shows the dedication and skills of our Oncology team. Our goal is not just to provide the best cancer care but also to improve the quality of life for all our patients, no matter how tough the case may be.”
Dr. Pratap Varma, who specializes in Surgical Oncology and Thoracic Surgery, also commented on the operation. He noted, “We were very aware of the risks due to Mr. Gheesaram’s age. But thanks to his strength and our team’s expertise in minimally invasive techniques, we were able to perform the surgery successfully. We are happy to see him recovering well.”
The medical team at AOI will continue to monitor Mr. Gheesaram’s health as he recovers. AOI remains committed to delivering top-notch cancer care and continues to be a leader in oncology treatment in India.
