6-year-old undergoes liver transplant at Osmania General Hospital

Surgeons at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in Hyderabad have saved the life of a 6-year-old child who had liver failure. The child, Pravathapuram Sai Praneeth, received a liver transplant from his father, Parvathapuram Chennaiah. The surgery was successful and both father and son have been discharged from the hospital. The surgery would have cost Rs 30 lakh in a corporate hospital, but the Telangana government provided free drugs for the child under the ‘Arogyasri’ health insurance scheme.

Dr Ch Madhusudan, head of gastroenterology and pediatric liver transplant specialist at OGH, said that this was the first pediatric living-related liver transplant taken up in government hospitals in Telangana. OGH superintendent, Dr B Nagender, thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Health Minister T Harish Rao for their support, as well as Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) for donating Rs 5.5 crore for liver transplant equipment.

OGH has been actively performing transplant surgeries since the launch of eight modular operation theatres. They have successfully conducted 23 liver transplants, 620 kidney transplants, and one pancreas transplant. Almost all of the kidney transplants were living-related organ donations.
