The Indian government will be sending a notice to WhatsApp regarding the increase in spam calls from foreign phone numbers, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT. Users have reported receiving a large number of these calls from numbers with country codes including Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. The minister believes that digital platforms are responsible for ensuring user safety and will hold them accountable for any misuses or breaches of privacy. The government plans to respond to every instance of these issues.

During an event organized by the Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI), Chandrasekhar also mentioned that the government is considering guidelines for permissions on preloaded apps. The minister reiterated that the platforms should ensure safety and trust for their users, especially since they are responsible for delivering services to digital citizens. If there is a problem with spam calls, messaging platforms like WhatsApp should address it.
