Hyderabad, April 3, 2024: Residents of Hyderabad are facing a severe water crisis as borewells across the city have dried up, leaving many without access to clean water. The majority of apartments, relying solely on borewells for their water needs, are bearing the brunt of the shortage, with some forced to shell out hefty sums to private water tankers.
The situation has reached a critical point for these apartment complexes, where a minimum of three water tankers per day are required to meet basic water requirements. However, the scarcity has led to a surge in demand for private water tankers, with prices ranging between Rs. 1000-1500 in certain areas, putting additional financial strain on residents.
Adding to the woes, citizens are finding it increasingly difficult to secure government-offered water tankers, leaving them with no choice but to rely on private suppliers. The depleting levels of ground water, dipping below 2000 feet in some areas, exacerbate the situation further, leaving citizens grappling with the uncertainty of accessing water for their daily needs.
The limited supply from municipal sources can barely fill half of the underground sump, offering a mere one to two hours of relief, highlighting the dire need for immediate action.
In desperation, citizens are left with no option but to bear the burden of hefty maintenance charges levied by apartment complexes to procure water through alternative means. As the crisis deepens, there is an urgent call for sustainable solutions and government intervention to alleviate the suffering of Hyderabad’s residents grappling with this acute water shortage.
