The European Union and the United States are working on a voluntary code of conduct for artificial intelligence. The code is expected to be drafted “within weeks” and will be open to all like-minded countries. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the Western partners felt the “fierce urgency” to act due to the growing force of China in the technology. The EU has been moving forward on the world’s first regulations on AI to ensure human control and ban biometric surveillance. The rules, however, would not enter into force before 2025 at the earliest.
The US has made no serious effort to regulate AI despite rising calls, including by some in the tech industry. Technology leaders, including Sam Altman, in a joint statement warned that AI put the world at risk without regulation. ChatGPT burst into the spotlight late last year as it demonstrated an ability to generate essays, poems, and conversations through minimal input.
