A tunnel collapse incident has occurred at SLBC in Nagarkurnool, similar to the one that took place in Uttarakhand on November 12, 2023. In that incident, a part of the Silkyara tunnel collapsed, trapping 41 workers inside. It took more than two weeks to rescue them.
The collapse happened while the workers were inside the tunnel, about 200 meters from the entrance. A nearby landslide caused heavy debris to block the tunnel opening, cutting off the workers’ oxygen supply. Rescuers used excavators and other heavy machines to clear the debris. In the final stage, miners had to drill through by hand to reach the trapped workers. The workers were eventually brought out safely on wheeled stretchers through a 90 cm wide pipe.
The Silkyara tunnel was part of a highway project aimed at improving road connectivity to important pilgrimage sites in the state.
