Water Shortage Issues in Hyderabad Due to Rising Temperatures

The rising temperatures in Hyderabad, along with ongoing water pipeline maintenance, have caused irregular water supply in many areas, especially in the western parts of the city. In some places, residents receive water only once every four to five days, and even then, the pressure is very low.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) claims to be making efforts to provide enough water. However, many localities still face a shortage. One reason for this could be the falling groundwater levels, despite good rainfall last monsoon. Recent data shows that groundwater levels in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits have dropped by an average of 9.46 meters below ground level. Additionally, pipeline maintenance work in different areas has made the situation worse. Some residents believe that increasing water supply during summer would help solve the issue.

For the past two months, people in Bachupally and Nizampet have been receiving water at irregular times with very low pressure. Since the water board has not provided a temporary solution, many residents are relying on private tankers. The same problem is happening in Kondapur and northern parts of the city, including RK Puram, Sainikpuri, and Malkajgiri.

Sai Teja, a resident of Nizampet, expressed his frustration, saying, “We are tired of repeatedly complaining to the water board, but nothing has changed. Last month, we received water once every four days, and now it has worsened to once every five days, with very low pressure. With the rising temperatures, the board should increase the water supply.”

A resident of Bachupally shared a similar concern, saying, “We don’t know why we are not receiving water on time. Currently, we get water once every five days, and that too at very low pressure. Even when we book water tankers, they get canceled automatically, leaving us with no choice but to depend on private tankers. Despite multiple complaints to the officials, no concrete action has been taken.”

Srinivas, a resident of Malkajgiri, also voiced his frustration, stating, “Whenever we complain, officials insist that water is being supplied, but the reality is that we are not receiving it on time.”

Residents are hoping for a quick solution to this problem, as the summer heat continues to rise and water shortages make daily life difficult.
