The Kejriwal government in Delhi has announced that it will provide free sugar to underprivileged families in the city. This decision aims to help low-income households and ensure food security for everyone. The government has been working to address the challenges faced by people during these tough economic times and high inflation rates. In the past, they provided free rations to beneficiaries of the Public Distribution System (PDS) from April 2020 to November 2020, and then extended it from May 2021 to May 2022.
In addition to free food grains like wheat and rice, the Delhi government has now decided to distribute free sugar to residents. The sugar subsidy scheme will provide free sugar to participants of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) from January 2023 to December 2023.
Around 2,80,290 beneficiaries, including 68,747 National Food Security Cardholders, will benefit from this initiative. The implementation of this scheme will require a budget of approximately Rs 1.11 crores. The Delhi government is committed to prioritizing the welfare of its residents.
To ensure smooth implementation of this scheme, the matter of free distribution of sugar under the Sugar Subsidy Scheme was brought before the Council of Ministers, and it was approved on July 20, 2023. The proposal was finally approved on August 21, 2023, under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal.
