The government has approved an additional subsidy of Rs 100 on LPG cylinders for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. This is to help economically disadvantaged households. Union Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed the increase, stating that Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries will now receive a subsidy of Rs 300, up from the previous Rs 200.
Under the Ujjwala Yojana, eligible beneficiaries will now receive an enhanced subsidy of Rs 300 on gas cylinders, reduced from the previous subsidy of Rs 200. This means they can purchase gas cylinders at a reduced cost of Rs 600.
This government decision aims to provide relief to low-income families across the country. It comes at an opportune time, just before important state elections later this year and the general election in 2024.
In August, the government had already reduced the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 200 for all consumers. However, Ujjwala beneficiaries were already receiving a total benefit of Rs 400 per cylinder. With the newly approved subsidy of Rs 100, the government’s overall support to Ujjwala beneficiaries now stands at Rs 500 per cylinder.
