The Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM) in Telangana has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to consider post-doctoral work done abroad when promoting faculty in State universities across India. According to the ABRSM, this issue is affecting many teachers in State universities.
The ABRSM representatives believe that recognizing overseas research experience could help improve research activities in State universities. It might also lead to more partnerships, increased funding, and better projects. Additionally, the ABRSM feels that this could help improve the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings of these universities.
Many in the academic community think that if the UGC accepts foreign post-doctoral experience, it will help researchers when they return to India. This recognition could improve their chances of getting promotions.
Sources say that the UGC is currently looking into these requests from teachers’ groups. There may soon be official guidelines to include international research experience in promotion criteria for State university faculty. Currently, institutes like IITs, NITs, and Central universities already consider overseas post-doctoral experience for promotions, but State universities do not.
