Hyderabad Traffic Police Intensify Drive Against Violations
The Hyderabad traffic police have stepped up their efforts to enforce traffic rules by targeting vehicles without proper number plates. They are also cracking down on drunk driving, helmetless riders, wrong-side driving, and vehicles with modified silencers, among other violations. These measures are part of a larger initiative to ensure road safety and reduce traffic offences across the city.
In light of recent road accidents, a special drive has been launched to catch rash drivers and rule-breakers. The Tri-Commissionerate—comprising Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda—has ramped up its efforts to improve traffic discipline and streamline the flow of vehicles.
So far this year, Hyderabad city police have caught 52,080 drunk drivers. Over the last three months, 824 of them have been sentenced to imprisonment ranging from one to ten days, while 227 were directed to perform two days of social service. Additionally, 99 driving licences have been suspended for two to six months based on orders from the Magistrates, and violators have been fined a total of ₹2.87 crore.
To tackle overspeeding, police have deployed advanced laser speed guns, booking over 1,300 offenders in just two weeks. Daily violations range between 100 and 150, with hotspots like KBR Park and Jubilee Hills receiving special attention to enhance road safety.
The Cyberabad traffic police have also intensified enforcement efforts, particularly on weekends. This past weekend, they apprehended 193 offenders, including riders of 160 two-wheelers, drivers of six three-wheelers, and 27 cars. The checks focused on drunk drivers, irregular number plates, helmetless riders, and wrong-route violations.
Traffic Joint Commissioner of Police Joel Davis explained the measures being taken to improve traffic conditions. These include analyzing daily traffic patterns during peak and non-peak hours, widening roads, removing obstructions and encroachments, introducing digital signboards, deploying additional traffic personnel, and recovering pending challans.
In addition to enforcement, the Cyberabad traffic volunteers performed a street play titled “Sadak pe Suraksha—Humari Suraksha” to educate motorists. The play emphasized the importance of wearing seat belts and helmets, avoiding cellphone use while driving, and adhering to speed limits.
The Rachakonda police have also taken strict action against vehicles with modified silencers. They recently demolished nearly 1,000 seized silencers to send a strong message against this violation. A police officer highlighted the nuisance caused by the deafening noise from aftermarket silencers, particularly at night, which has been a source of complaints from residents, including children, senior citizens, and patients.
To further promote road safety, the tri-Commissionerate traffic police are organizing educational camps and using social media to spread awareness about the importance of following traffic rules. These combined efforts aim to build a safer and more disciplined traffic environment in Hyderabad.
