Mir Zulfiqar Ali, also known as ‘Mamu’, is a well-known figure in Hyderabad. He is a first-time MLA from the Charminar assembly constituency and has previously served as the Mayor of Hyderabad two times. Zulfiqar Ali, who ran for elections in 2023 with the AIMIM party, holds the distinction of being the youngest Mayor in Hyderabad’s history, having been just 26 years old during his tenure.
Zulfiqar Ali has been an active member of the AIMIM party since the 1984 MP elections. He started his political journey under the guidance of Salar, Salahuddin Owaisi, the father of Asad Owaisi. Zulfiqar Ali believes that a political leader must have a sense of social responsibility, a commitment to serving the people, and most importantly, patience. His climb up the political ladder—from a young party member to corporator to Mayor and now MLA—has been a result of hard work and dedication.
During his college days, Zulfiqar Ali was often compared to Bollywood actors like Shashi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor. Born on November 1, 1961, he completed his Intermediate education at City Science College in Hyderabad in 1977. He hails from Gulab Singh Bowli, Koka Ki Tatti in Hussainialam under the Charminar constituency. Zulfiqar Ali’s political career began with campaigning alongside Salar during elections in Hyderabad, Vikarabad, and Chevella.
Zulfiqar Ali’s political journey saw him win a municipality ticket from the Jahanuma division in 1986, thanks to his close relationship with Salar. He later became a standing committee member, a floor leader, and ultimately Mayor at the age of 26. Despite losing the MLA elections in 1994 from Asif Nagar by a narrow margin, Zulfiqar Ali continued to serve the public. He was re-elected as Mayor of Hyderabad in 2002 and won the municipality elections from Hussainialam division in 2009. In 2023, he secured victory as an MLA from Charminar assembly constituency with a significant majority of over 22,000 votes.
