Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) have developed autonomous vehicles. These vehicles were created at the Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) at IIT-H. On Monday, the researchers showcased these autonomous cars during a special event. The event was attended by IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu.
Professor P Rajalakshmi, the project director, explained that the team had gathered over 4,000 kilometers of traffic data by driving on Indian roads. This data was then uploaded to the cloud. The autonomous vehicles use this data to identify obstacles, vehicles, humans, and other elements on the road to navigate safely.
During the demonstration, the vehicles showcased their ability to recognize traffic signals, signs, and obstacles. They could also navigate through various curves, including the difficult ‘S’ curve. The IT and Industries Minister mentioned that the State government plans to include the IIT-H director as a member of the Skill University board. He also announced an investment of Rs 2,400 crore in 65 Industrial Training Institutes across the State to enhance students’ skills.
