Police in Thailand have widened their investigation into a woman accused of murdering people with cyanide poisoning. Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, who is married to a senior policeman, was arrested on Tuesday over nine alleged murders which took place over several years. Police have now charged her with premeditated murder in relation to 13 deaths dating back to 2020. Officers believe money was the motive in the killings but said that Sararat has previously been diagnosed with psychiatric issues. She denies all allegations against her.

Investigators suspect that Sararat poisoned the victims’ food and drink with cyanide, which they found at her home. A fourteenth person narrowly escaped death after vomiting up poisoned food. The suspect lured her latest victim into eating a herb, and around 20 minutes later she collapsed. Police are urging members of the public with information about other potential cases to contact them. Officers have expanded the geographic area they are investigating to five provinces, most to the west of Bangkok.

Sararat is currently experiencing stress, blurry eyes and headaches, and it was confirmed that she is four months pregnant following routine health checks in prison. Her police officer husband and other witnesses have been interviewed by investigators. The victim who initially aroused suspicion collapsed on the bank of the Mae Klong River after releasing fish as part of a Buddhist ritual in Ratchaburi province, west of Bangkok, about two weeks ago. After questioning the suspect, investigators linked her to other cyanide poisoning cases.
