Telangana Sets Record in Paddy Procurement

For the first time in a decade, Telangana has achieved a significant milestone in the procurement of fine variety paddy. During the current Kharif season, the state recorded an impressive procurement of 18 lakh metric tonnes of fine variety paddy, benefiting nearly 3.36 lakh farmers. The government also provided a bonus of Rs 500 per quintal, amounting to a total payout of Rs 939 crore to farmers in this single season.

Officials reported that the state had procured paddy worth Rs 10,149 crore so far. Out of this, Rs 939 crore was dedicated to the bonus payments, with Rs 591 crore already deposited into the bank accounts of farmers. This initiative marks a significant step toward supporting farmers and boosting agricultural income.

Overall, Telangana procured 47.01 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this season. This included 28.23 lakh metric tonnes of coarse variety and 18.78 lakh metric tonnes of fine variety. Compared to the previous year, 2023, the state procured six lakh metric tonnes more, as last year’s total stood at 41.2 lakh metric tonnes. Paddy was purchased from 8.84 lakh farmers across the state.

The procurement process was carried out efficiently at 8,318 centres set up across Telangana. The State Civil Supplies Department ensured all necessary arrangements were in place to streamline the process. Additionally, precautions were taken to protect farmers from potential losses caused by unseasonal rains.

Among the districts, Kamareddy, Nizamabad, Medak, Jagtial, Peddapalli, and Siddipet emerged as the top contributors to paddy procurement through these centres. The success of this year’s procurement highlights Telangana’s commitment to supporting its farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector.
