UDID Cards to Replace Disability Certificates in Telangana
On Saturday, SERP CEO Divya Devarajan held a video conference with district collectors to discuss the issuance of Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards for persons with disabilities. She also reviewed the implementation of solar power plants in different districts.
During the meeting, she emphasized that UDID cards should replace traditional disability certificates. She directed officials to follow government guidelines for this transition. All necessary details, including the disability percentage certified by medical professionals, must be uploaded to the UDID portal. Once issued, the UDID card will be sent directly to the applicant’s home via speed post.
UDID cards will be provided after assessing disability percentages for individuals with visual impairment, leprosy, hearing disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental health conditions. New applicants can apply through Mee-Seva centers, while those with existing disability certificates will receive their UDID through the District Rural Development Officer.
Persons with disabilities in Telangana can continue using their disability certificates for pensions and benefits until February 28, 2025. However, to access facilities in other states, a UDID card will be required. From March 1, 2025, all pensions and benefits will be provided only through the UDID system.
To ensure a smooth transition, training will be given to Mee-Seva center operators, Panchayat Secretaries, and other officials involved in the application process. Hospitals must have the necessary staff and equipment for UDID verification. Authorities were also instructed to provide essential amenities such as seating and drinking water at medical camps for persons with disabilities.
District collectors were asked to work with hospital superintendents to assess available infrastructure and submit proposals for any necessary upgrades. Hospitals will schedule medical verification slots for new UDID applicants, and once verified, the UDID will be issued.
Solar Power Plant Implementation
Apart from the UDID initiative, the meeting also covered the PM-KUSUM scheme, which aims to promote solar energy. Land identification for installing solar power plants has been completed in several districts. Officials were directed to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to facilitate the establishment of these plants.
The video conference was attended by District Collector B.Y. Santosh, Additional Collector Narsinga Rao, District Welfare Officer Sunanda, Medical Superintendent Dr. Indira, and other officials.
A Step Toward Inclusivity and Sustainability
The decision to replace disability certificates with UDID cards marks a major shift toward a more transparent and efficient system. This change will help persons with disabilities access benefits without bureaucratic delays. The UDID card will also ensure uniform recognition across states, making it easier for individuals to avail of services nationwide.
Additionally, the focus on improving medical infrastructure will ensure timely support for persons with disabilities. Training sessions for government officials and Mee-Seva operators will help streamline the process.
The discussion on solar power plants under the PM-KUSUM scheme highlights the government’s commitment to sustainable energy. By identifying land and preparing detailed reports, authorities are taking steps toward an eco-friendly energy transition that could benefit rural communities.
Overall, the review meeting showcased a well-rounded approach to governance, prioritizing accessibility for persons with disabilities while also promoting sustainable development.
