Stay Safe: Precautionary Measures to Prevent Respiratory Infections

The State government has issued precautionary guidelines to help people stay safe from respiratory infections, including the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). While no cases of HMPV have been reported in Telangana so far, these measures aim to promote good health practices and prevent the spread of illnesses.

    Things You Should Do:

Cover Your Mouth and Nose: Use a handkerchief or tissue paper when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of germs.
Wash Your Hands Often: Clean your hands with soap, water, or an alcohol-based sanitizer regularly.
Maintain Distance: Stay at least an arm’s length away from people who have flu symptoms.
Avoid Public Places if Sick: If you have a fever, cough, or sneezing, stay at home and avoid crowded areas.
Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthy: Drink plenty of water and consume nutritious food to boost your immune system.
Ensure Proper Ventilation: Keep your surroundings well-ventilated with fresh outdoor air.

    Things to Avoid:

No Handshakes: Avoid shaking hands to reduce the risk of spreading infections.
Don’t Reuse Tissues or Handkerchiefs: Always use fresh tissues and wash handkerchiefs regularly.
Avoid Close Contact with Sick Individuals: Keep your distance from people who show signs of illness.
Don’t Touch Your Face Frequently: Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, and mouth often, as this can spread germs.
No Spitting in Public: Spitting can spread infections and should be avoided.
Avoid Self-Medication: Do not take medicines without consulting a doctor.

    Current Situation in Telangana

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China has raised global concerns, but Telangana remains unaffected. The State Director of Public Health (DPH), Dr. B. Ravinder Naik, reassured the public that there is no reason to panic.

“So far, no case of HMPV has been reported in Telangana. The Health Department has reviewed data on respiratory infections in the State, and there has been no significant increase in cases during December 2024 compared to December 2023,” Dr. Naik stated.

    Health Department’s Vigilance

The Health Department is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) in New Delhi. Dr. Naik explained that HMPV is similar to other respiratory viruses, such as those causing common colds and flu, and it mostly affects younger and older age groups during the winter season.

“As a precautionary measure, we encourage people to follow the suggested dos and don’ts to protect themselves from respiratory infections,” he added.

By adopting these simple safety practices, individuals can reduce the risk of infections and help maintain public health during the winter season.
