Cybercrimes are increasing rapidly, affecting people from all walks of life. Fraudsters are not sparing anyone, from politicians to common citizens and even lower-level employees.
Recently, an incident came to light where a government official, who should have been cautious about cyber fraud, became a victim himself. Damodar, the Tehsildar of Rajapet in the Yadadri-Bhongir district, was tricked by cybercriminals.
On Sunday, February 9, Damodar received a phone call on his personal number. The caller claimed to be an official from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The fraudsters accused him of corruption and said they had evidence against him. They threatened to arrest him unless he paid them money.
Fearful of the consequences, Damodar believed their claims. He collected money from his son and his son’s friends and transferred a total of Rs 2.8 lakh in multiple transactions. Later, he realized that the calls were fake. On Monday, he and his son went to the LB Nagar Police Station to file a complaint.
Based on his complaint, the Cyber Crime Police registered a case and started an investigation. According to Damodar, cybercriminals are now using new tactics, such as pretending to be officials from ACB or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to threaten and extort money.
Authorities are continuously spreading awareness about digital scams and advising people to stay alert. Police officials urge citizens, especially government employees, to be cautious and verify such calls before taking any action.
