Hyderabad has wrapped up a five-day initiative called ‘Swachadanam-Pachadanam,’ aimed at making the city cleaner and greener. This program, organized by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), involved distributing 2.75 lakh saplings and planting over 64,000 of them. On the final day, notable figures such as Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, Deputy Mayor Srilata Shobhan Reddy, GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata, and Nampally MLA Mohammed Majid Hussain planted saplings at the University College of Science in Masab Tank. The Mayor highlighted the importance of keeping the city clean and green and encouraged residents to continue supporting these efforts.
Throughout the program, significant progress was made. The GHMC completed plantations along 4,643 meters of median areas and 68.86 km of avenue plantations. Additionally, 802 parks were cleaned. The corporation also removed more than 4,853.78 tonnes of garbage and 4,306.68 tonnes of construction and demolition waste. In total, 1,214 km of roadsides and medians were cleared.
Officials visited 2,137 colonies across the city and organized a Parichayam program in 71,271 households. They assigned 1,005 SATs to shops, commercial areas, and Resident Welfare Associations. The cleanup campaign also involved the removal of 102 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) and the clearing of 4,820 GVPs. Community spaces such as 551 community halls, 253 graveyards, 625 educational institutions, and 214 weekly market committees were also part of the cleanup. On the health front, anti-larva operations were conducted in 304,113 houses, and fogging was done in 1,830 colonies and around 25 lakes. The campaign also sterilised over 2,765 stray dogs and identified 1,572 unsterilized dogs, with 639 people participating in feeding dogs at 465 designated areas.
In efforts around water bodies, more than 80.9 tonnes of solid waste and 98.9 tonnes of construction and demolition waste were removed from lakes and other water bodies, with 145 garbage vulnerable points cleared. The initiative also included 2,350 awareness meetings on digital door numbering and 938 SLF meetings. In terms of infrastructure, the engineering wing desilted 93.034 km of drainage, filled 646 potholes, and cleared 211 stagnation points.
