The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Ujjal Bhuyan, Chief Justice of Telangana High Court, and S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti, Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, to the Supreme Court of India. This recommendation comes as the Supreme Court currently has 3 vacancies out of its sanctioned strength of 34 Judges.
The Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, aims to fill these vacancies to increase the number of working Judges and reduce the backlog of cases. The unanimous resolution recommends the appointment of Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti as Judges of the Supreme Court.
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has been serving as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court since June 28, 2022. He has previously served as a judge of Gauhati High Court and Bombay High Court, gaining expertise in the law of taxation. Justice Bhuyan is highly regarded for his integrity and competence.
Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti, on the other hand, has been serving as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court since June 1, 2023. He was previously a judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh and has extensive experience in the judiciary. The appointment of Justice Bhatti would also provide representation for the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in the Supreme Court, which has been lacking since August 2022.
Overall, these appointments are aimed at strengthening the Supreme Court and ensuring a smooth functioning of the judiciary system in India.
