The Telangana government has launched the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme for government school children. The aim is to provide breakfast to around 23 lakh students in government schools. The scheme was launched by Telangana Ministers including Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, Minister for Information Technology and Industries, KT Rama Rao (KTR), Minister for Medical Health and Finance Harish Rao, and Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy at various government schools.

The scheme was initially introduced in selected schools by the Ministers and MLAs in all 119 constituencies. They enjoyed breakfast with the students after the launch. The remaining schools will introduce the scheme after the Dussehra holidays. Minister K T Rama Rao, speaking at the launch event at Government High School Girls, West Marredpally, said that this innovative scheme is the first of its kind in the state and will benefit 2.3 million students in 27,147 government and Panchayat Raj schools. The scheme has been implemented at a cost of around Rs.400 crore and the breakfast provided is both nutritious and tasty.

KTR also mentioned that a similar scheme in Tamil Nadu for school children of Classes 1 to 5 served as inspiration for this model. A team of officials studied the Tamil Nadu model and came up with an improved version for Telangana. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wanted the scheme to be implemented for students up to Class 10 in Telangana, and that is exactly what has been done.

The main objective of the scheme is to ensure that students whose parents leave for work early in the morning do not come to school on empty stomachs.
