Hyderabad: Tension broke out at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Sunday when several students were detained by the Cyberabad police. The students were protesting on the East campus against the clearing of land in Kancha Gachibowli. The Telangana government plans to auction this 400-acre area to develop infrastructure and IT parks.

The situation escalated when bulldozers arrived to clear a forested area. After hearing about this, many students gathered to protest. They shouted slogans at the police, who had blocked off the East campus with barricades. Some students even climbed onto the bulldozers to stop them from working. The police soon detained several of the students involved.

One detained female student shared her experience. She said they had just gone to the area to ask why the bulldozers were there. “We simply questioned the official there. In fact, I was leaving when the police forcibly detained me,” she explained.

Other students claimed that the land belongs to the university and that no proper land survey had been done. They said the government acted without warning and started clearing the area illegally. During the protest, police allegedly manhandled some of them and pushed them into vans and trucks. The detained students were taken to unknown locations, and around 100 protesters were taken into custody.
