Rescue Operation at SLBC Tunnel Continues After 23 Days
The search for the seven missing workers trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel near Domalapenta village is still ongoing. Even after 23 days, the rescue teams have made little progress. Despite using advanced machinery, clearing the debris remains a major challenge.
To speed up the process, officials have deployed five mini-excavators in a chain-link system. These excavators help move silt and debris to the conveyor belt for removal. Additionally, experts from South Central Railway (SCR) are carefully taking apart the tunnel boring machine (TBM) using trolleys connected to a locomotive inside the tunnel.
A major breakthrough in the search was made when human remains detection dogs (HRDDs) confirmed possible locations, marked as D1 and D2. However, excavation at these points is difficult because the debris includes hardened silt and heavy TBM parts.
To speed things up, officials have increased the de-watering process with additional high-power pumps. The total pumping capacity has now reached 3,000 HP. Ventilation and fresh air systems have also been restored up to the D2 point to improve conditions for workers inside the tunnel. A new 30 HP liquid ring vacuum pump, brought to the site on March 14, was put to use on Sunday evening.
Despite these efforts, the rescue teams continue to face technical difficulties. Families of the missing workers remain anxious, hoping for a breakthrough soon.
