New Delhi – The Wildlife Animal Protection Forum of South Africa (WAPFSA), a coalition of 30 South African conservation organizations, has raised concerns over the export of wild animals, including leopards and tigers, to Vantara, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre owned by Anant Ambani, son of industrialist Mukesh Ambani.
Concerns Over CITES Compliance
In a letter addressed to South African Environment Minister Dion George, WAPFSA highlighted concerns within the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regarding the large-scale export of various species to Vantara. The forum has requested a formal investigation into the matter.
According to WAPFSA, representatives of Vantara visited the CITES Secretariat on July 28, 2023, stating that the centre had rescued animals from difficult conditions outside India and imported them from multiple countries. However, the forum raised concerns about captive-bred specimens in South African facilities being traded for commercial purposes.
Questions Raised About Cheetah Export
The forum also raised concerns about the export of 12 cheetahs to India, stating that there were no non-detrimental findings related to their relocation. Additionally, WAPFSA questioned the origin of 56 cheetahs exported from South Africa, seeking further clarity on their movement and purpose.
Background on Vantara
Vantara was officially launched on February 26, 2024, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 3, coinciding with World Wildlife Day. The centre aims to provide rescue and rehabilitation services for various wild species.
