Recently, heavy rains have caused significant damage in Khammam. The main canal of the Sitarama project, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, has ruptured due to floodwaters entering the canal. The rupture happened near the second pump house of the project, located in Mulakalapalli mandal near VK Ramavaram. A section of the canal bund, about 40–50 feet long, was washed away, leaving hundreds of acres of standing crops submerged.
In another part of the district, the ring bund of the Peddavagu medium irrigation project in Gummadavelli hamlet, located in the Aswaraopet mandal, also gave way due to the heavy rains.
This isn’t the first time the Sitarama project has faced issues. Back in July, there was a significant breach near the spillway of the project, which caused extensive damage.
Additionally, there was another breach in Peddakaluva, which is located in Hatyatanda under the Mallaigudem Panchayat. The heavy flow of floodwater in the left canal of the Nagarjuna Sagar in Kusumanch mandal, Palair, caused the Peddavagu canal to collapse. As a result, floodwaters entered several villages in the Palair constituency.
