In Hyderabad, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has chosen Abhishek Manu Singhvi to run as their candidate in the upcoming bye-election for the Council of States from Telangana. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set September 3 as the date for bypolls to fill 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats across India.
The need for a bypoll in Telangana arose after K Keshava Rao recently resigned from his MP position. Singhvi, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) and a senior spokesperson for the AICC, had previously lost a Rajya Sabha seat to the BJP’s Harsh Mahajan in Himachal Pradesh due to a draw of lots. Despite this, Singhvi remains an important leader within the party and was chosen as the top candidate after Rao’s resignation.
Keshava Rao has returned to the Congress party and has been appointed as an advisor to the State government. Earlier this year, the Congress party also nominated M Anil Kumar Yadav and Renuka Chowdhury to the Rajya Sabha from the State.
