A woman from Siddipet district has been hospitalized in Hyderabad with symptoms resembling Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological condition. According to medical sources, her condition is critical, and she is currently on ventilator support.
This case comes on the heels of a recent increase in GBS cases reported in Pune. Guillain-Barre Syndrome often occurs as a complication following bacterial or viral infections. Symptoms typically appear two to six weeks after the initial illness.
GBS is characterized by rapid muscle weakness, numbness, and, in severe cases, paralysis. Many patients experience weakness in their limbs, while some report digestive issues, like diarrhea, before developing neurological symptoms. Although rare, the condition can lead to serious health complications if not treated promptly.
Experts emphasize that Guillain-Barre Syndrome is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that while cases have been reported in children and young adults, the syndrome does not pose a risk of becoming an epidemic or pandemic.
“The exact cause behind the rise in cases in Pune is still being investigated. However, most people diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome recover fully with appropriate medical treatment,” the ICMR stated in a release.
Doctors in Hyderabad are closely monitoring the Siddipet woman’s condition. Health officials urge the public to stay vigilant and seek immediate medical care if they notice sudden muscle weakness or other unusual neurological symptoms.
