Nitesh Vyas, the Senior Deputy Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India, recently discussed the preparations needed for the upcoming State assembly elections. During a video conference with election officials, Vyas emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth and error-free electoral process.
In the meeting, several key recommendations were made. It was suggested that all necessary arrangements, such as receiving nominations and providing security for the storage and transportation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), should be carefully organized. Punctuality in the nomination submission process was stressed, and candidates were advised to thoroughly review their nomination details and enter them promptly online.
Vyas also highlighted the need to make voter list details available to every candidate and to assign election symbols to independent candidates and candidates from unrecognised parties with vigilance. Steps after the nomination process, such as preparing ballot papers, postal ballots, and randomizing EVM machines, were outlined.
Efficient processing of pending voter registration applications was prioritized. Logistical arrangements, including distributing voter slips, providing strong room facilities for EVM storage, and establishing distribution and reception centers for polling, were stressed. Adequate security for officials moving the EVM machines was also deemed important. Essential amenities at polling stations, such as drinking water, lighting, and toilets, were emphasized. Measures to support disabled voters and distribute a list of polling stations to political parties were deemed crucial.
Postal ballot facilities for government employees, media representatives, and emergency services personnel involved in electoral duties were also emphasized. Strict adherence to the election code of conduct was recommended. The establishment of media centers in district centers and Assembly constituencies for transparency and accountability was suggested. Vyas called for impartial and timely granting of permissions required by political parties and candidates on a first-come-first-served basis. Measures to prevent the distribution of illegal cash and liquor during the elections were also highlighted.
Vyas directed Grievance Committees in each district to address appeals promptly and inform IT officials when cash seizures exceeded 10 lakh. He announced that election observers would conduct field visits from November 3 and called for adequate preparations.
