The Telangana government may be focusing more on building new schools and promoting English medium education rather than on improving student learning outcomes, according to the National Achievement Survey (NAS) and Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) findings.
In 2017, NAS conducted a survey for Classes III, V, and VIII. In 2021, NAS expanded the survey to include all states and looked at learning outcomes for students in Classes III, V, VIII, and X.
The NAS-2017 found that a high percentage of students could understand what teachers were saying in the classroom. There was a correlation between students who used the language at home and those who understood the language used in the classroom.
Similarly, the NAS-2021 showed that a majority of students in Classes III, V, VIII, and X could understand their teachers because the language used in the classroom matched their home language.
These findings raise questions about whether the Telangana government is focusing enough on improving learning outcomes in its education policies.
