The lung spaces in the Sainikpuri locality of Hyderabad are disappearing due to the construction of commercial projects. This is a problem because it means that the local residents won’t have access to these important open areas anymore. The commercial ventures are taking over these spaces, which is a threat to the well-being and quality of life for the community.

When The Hans India visited the area, they saw that many tree branches had been cut down and the shrubs and plants were in disarray. One park that used to be filled with children playing was at risk of being turned into a sports ground. This is sad because it means that the children won’t have a place to play anymore and the park will only be used for sports.

A resident of the area said, “It’s disheartening to see tree branches being cut down for sports activities. These spaces were important for morning walkers and served multiple purposes in the community. When these spaces become commercialized, they become exclusive and off-limits to the people who used to enjoy them. This not only disrupts the routines of regular users but also isolates these areas from the rest of the community.”

The long-term residents of Sainikpuri are unhappy with the changes happening in their area. They are upset that the ecological richness and biodiversity of the spaces are being compromised. The loss of these natural elements not only changes the landscape but also disrupts the delicate balance of life that existed there.

Another resident expressed their concerns about the rapid commercialization of Sainikpuri. They believe that parks should remain as parks and if they need maintenance, they can work with GHMC. They feel that having sports complexes in a residential area takes away from the essence of Sainikpuri/Vayupuri. They question who this development is really benefiting if it takes away the peace of the residents.

Overall, the commercialization of Sainikpuri is causing the disappearance of open spaces and impacting the well-being and quality of life for the community. The loss of these spaces also means a loss of ecological richness and balance. The residents are unhappy with these changes and believe that parks should remain as recreational areas.
