Hyderabad: The future of food security depends on the health of soil and plants. To improve both, natural methods must be modernized to protect plant health, which in turn benefits human health. This was emphasized by Dr. Danda Rajireddy, Vice Chancellor of Sri Konda Lakshman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU).
Dr. Rajireddy was speaking at an International Workshop on Plant Health and Food Safety. The event was jointly organized by Telangana Horticultural University, Auburn University (USA), and the Asian PGPR Society. It took place at the university campus on Sunday.
He highlighted the need for organic and sustainable farming methods to increase the productivity of horticultural crops. With the world’s population growing, modern research should focus on improving agricultural techniques to ensure food security.
Dr. MS Reddy, a professor at Auburn University and the Founder of the Asian PGPR Society, delivered the keynote speech. He stressed the increasing global importance of safe food. While much research is being done, he pointed out that plant health should be the primary focus.
Dr. Reddy called for more research on regenerative horticulture, natural and organic farming, integrated agriculture, and the use of bio-fertilizers. He also noted that crops grown in India have strong immunity. Additionally, he highlighted the potential for horticultural crop-based businesses in the future.
Seenivasan, Director of International Programs at the university, said the workshop would help improve crop health in Telangana using natural methods.
Dr. Rajireddy also announced that Telangana Horticultural University and the Asian PGPR Society would soon begin joint research. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed to formalize this collaboration.
