Telangana May Lift Two-Child Rule for Rural Polls
The Telangana government is considering removing the rule that prevents people with more than two children from contesting in rural local body elections. However, a final decision will only be made after quotas for these elections are determined.
Congress party sources revealed on Tuesday that the matter will likely be addressed once the ongoing caste census is completed. The caste census, which is a detailed survey of socio-economic, employment, political, and caste data, is nearing its final stages. This survey was a key election promise made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and began on November 6.
Previously, officials had hinted that the government might return to the older policy, which existed before the 1990s. Back then, the government of undivided Andhra Pradesh introduced the two-child policy for contesting local elections. Over time, this rule was repealed for urban local bodies in Telangana.
Recently, the Andhra Pradesh Assembly also made a similar move. It passed a bill allowing individuals with more than two children to contest urban local body elections, reversing the earlier restriction.
