Matrimonial Fraud on the Rise: Hyderabad Official Issues Warning

Matrimonial fraud cases are on the rise, prompting VC Sajjanar, a Senior IPS officer and Managing Director of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, to issue an important warning. He urged future brides and grooms to remain cautious to avoid becoming victims of these scams, which can lead to significant financial losses.

Sajjanar highlighted the tactics used by fraudsters and stressed the need for vigilance when interacting with individuals on matrimonial websites. He encouraged people to report any suspicious activities without delay, as this could help protect others from falling prey to similar scams.

Using social media platform X, Sajjanar explained how fraudsters operate. “Fraudsters are creating fake profiles with photos of attractive young men and women on matrimonial websites,” he wrote. “They lure victims with false promises of marriage and then make nude video calls. These calls are later used to blackmail the victims, demanding money in exchange for not sharing the explicit content.”

He also noted that the number of such cases has increased recently. Many victims hesitate to report the crimes out of fear of losing their reputation. Sajjanar urged people to avoid making video calls or sharing private photos online, especially with strangers. “If you become a victim, report it immediately by calling 1930,” he advised.

One recent case in Hyderabad illustrates the dangers of these scams. A 45-year-old man seeking a life partner on a matrimonial site ended up losing Rs 4.9 lakh. A woman, claiming to be a doctor and a divorcee living abroad, contacted him and expressed interest in marriage.

The two began exchanging messages and phone calls. The woman promised to marry him upon her return to India and fabricated stories to gain his trust. She eventually convinced him to transfer money to her bank account for various reasons. The man realized he had been cheated when she stopped responding to his calls.

This case serves as a reminder to be cautious and vigilant while using matrimonial websites. Always verify the identity of the person you are speaking with and avoid sharing personal or financial information.
