Residents of Nuh were able to leave their homes cautiously on Thursday as the curfew was relaxed for eight hours. This is the first time the curfew has been relaxed since the communal clashes on July 31, which led to prohibitory orders and an internet shutdown in the district. However, some locals are still doubtful about the situation due to tension caused by police actions, political rhetoric, and contentious social media content.
There are concerns about an upcoming panchayat scheduled in Khera village by right-wing groups on August 13, which is focused on the Nuh violence. The police spokesperson confirmed that all relevant information about the panchayat has been shared with the deputy commissioner. Paramilitary and police forces are present in Nuh to maintain law and order.
The deputy commissioner of Nuh clarified that the curfew is still in effect under Section 144 of the CrPC, and gatherings are not allowed.
Despite the uncertainty, residents are relieved to have the opportunity to reopen their businesses during this limited curfew relaxation. One shop owner reported positive responses from customers, including paramilitary personnel who needed daily essentials. While cash payments were accepted due to the internet service suspension, autorickshaws were also available for transportation to Sohna in Gurgaon.
However, there is still apprehension among residents. An advocate expressed concerns about the possibility of unforeseen events happening again in Nuh. He believes that the presence of central forces is important, but also highlighted the role of controversial social media content and videos before the violence occurred.
Residents long for a return to peace and harmony in Nuh. Another eight-hour curfew relaxation was announced for Friday from 7 am to 3 pm, showing the delicate balance between maintaining order and restoring normalcy in the district.
