Hyderabad: The removal of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in Neredmet from the first phase of web counselling for two-year diploma courses in elementary education (D.El.Ed) and pre-school education (DPSE) for 2024-25 has caused problems for many students. These students are now forced to select other DIET colleges in different districts.

Some candidates pointed out that in the first phase of the DEECET 2024, seats were given in districts outside Hyderabad. Around 350 candidates are now waiting for the second phase, hoping they can get a seat in DIET Hyderabad. The issue arose because the National Council for Technical Education (NCTE) did not grant affiliation to DIET Neredmet. This has resulted in many students being assigned to colleges outside the city. However, some candidates are finding it difficult to move to other districts due to financial or family problems, leaving them uncertain about their future.

One of the affected candidates, K Jayasir, shared his situation. “I was given a seat in Mahabubnagar, but because of family issues, I can’t move there. It would be helpful if the Telangana Education Department could secure affiliation for DIET Neredmet, so we can stay local.” He mentioned that the college has space for 300 students—150 in the first year and 150 in the second year. Another candidate, N Sujatha, also expressed similar concerns.

Kasturi Ravinder, the general secretary of the State Guest Lecturers Association, pointed to the challenges DIET Hyderabad is facing. He explained, “A lack of government support and a decision to use part of the campus for non-academic purposes have affected the institute. Delays in submitting documents to the NCTE caused DIET Hyderabad to be left out of the first phase of admissions this year. This has led to fewer students enrolling, which threatens the institute’s survival. Furthermore, with all 30 teaching positions vacant, the institute relies entirely on guest lecturers to run its educational programs.”

Ravinder stressed that DIET Hyderabad is especially important among the ten DIETs in Telangana. Its central location makes it accessible to students from all over the State, and many students from other regions are also attracted to it. Given the difficulties local students are facing, he suggested that the State government should take special steps to allow them to get seats in DIET Hyderabad during the second phase of admissions.

Meanwhile, officials from the School Education Department of Telangana have stated that they are working to submit the necessary documents to the NCTE again. They hope to secure affiliation for DIET Neredmet for the next academic year.
