The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has collected Rs 257 crore more in property taxes this year compared to last year, surpassing the previous year’s figures by a large margin. The total amount collected so far is Rs 1,917 crore, exceeding the revised budget estimates of Rs 1,810 crore for the fiscal year 2023–2024.
This increase in property tax collections is a significant achievement for GHMC, with last year’s collections totaling Rs 1,660 crore, marking a 15.5 per cent growth compared to the financial year 2022-2023. One of the key factors contributing to this success is the implementation of the One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme, which offers a 90 per cent interest waiver on property tax arrears up to the financial year 2022–23. This initiative alone has resulted in the collection of nearly Rs 300 crore this year.
GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose highlighted the importance of last-minute collections, noting that over Rs 123 crore was collected on the final day alone. This achievement demonstrates the dedication and collaboration between taxpayers and GHMC officials, even during an election year where officials had additional duties.
Efforts to address long-standing issues with government and private entities have also played a significant role in streamlining the tax collection process and improving efficiency. GHMC recognized the efforts of bill collectors, tax inspectors, and various other officials who have contributed to this historic milestone.
Special officers have been actively involved in achieving record-breaking figures, according to Ronald Rose. GHMC extends its gratitude to all taxpayers for their cooperation and compliance, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing civic amenities and infrastructure through sustainable revenue generation.
