Recognizing Rural Women Workers' Day: Saluting the Pillars of the Rural Economy

Gadwal: On October 15, Rural Women’s Day was celebrated in Macharla village, Gattu Mandal. The event was led by Village Association Leader Maheshwari, Mandal Association Leader Keshamma, and District Association Leader Lavanya.

During the event, TVVU District General Secretary G. Narasimhulu spoke about the vital role of women in rural areas. He explained that women are the backbone of the rural economy, doing more than 70% of the work. However, despite their hard work, many rural women lack basic rights such as access to land, education, nutrition, and healthcare. They also face violence, sexual harassment, and exploitation both at home and in the workplace.

Narasimhulu also highlighted the negative effects of globalization and privatization. He mentioned that many poor villagers are losing their lands to industrial projects, and in some tribal areas, women are being forced into prostitution due to a lack of job opportunities.

He emphasized the importance of women in rural development, food security, and the fight against poverty. Rural women contribute to many activities such as seed and vegetable production, crop preservation, animal husbandry, and weaving. However, they often lack decision-making power, property rights, and control over their earnings. Narasimhulu also pointed out that women are not paid equally for their work, even though they work alongside men.

The event also featured a tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, with a garland placed on his photo. The women workers and multipurpose workers were honored by the village association leaders. A rally was held with 35 women workers, who marched through the streets, raising slogans for their rights.

Several key figures attended the event, including Village Association Leader Maheshwari, Mandal Association President Narsamma, Keshamma, Maheshwari, Shruti, and Jayamma.
